It’s time for our monthly contest, which is a little more difficult and/or time consuming but wins a bigger prize. Woohoo!
Does anybody like to quilt? This month we’re going to learn a new technique usually used by quilters, but we’re going to use it on our paper scraps. I came across another online site, posted by Scrapbook & Cards Today designer Emily Pitts. Here’s the link: http://scrapbookandcardstodaymag.typepad.com/scrapbook_cards_today_blo/2010/02/designer-project-with-emily.html
I want us to make a 12x12 sheet of paper using this quilting technique on our 1- to 2-page 12x12-inch layout. We may choose to sew them as shown in the link, but we don’t have to--it’s a cool look both ways. Also, we can use any theme and embellishments to go along with this technique. A few themes off the top of my head are bright and pastel scraps for a spring/Easter page, animal print scraps for a zoo page, and primary color scraps for a school page, although the possibilities are endless.
We have a little more than a month to do this one, so let’s see if we can produce some wowzer pages and clear out some of our scraps in the process. :)
Please see the Contest Rules thread for further guidelines.
Sorry, no digital entries are allowed this month.
Design team is eligible to play.
Once you've finished with your layout, post it in the appropriate contest gallery by Monday, April 5, 2010, at 11:59 p.m. MST. Then link it back into this thread to share with us. If your layout predominantly features StoryTellers Club products, you’ll get an additional entry. A random drawing will select a winner who will receive an extra-special prize from StoryTellers Club! |

I don't even own a sewing machine. Mine would certainly be adhesed.
Mom did a quilt like this, well, similar, had a different name for it, but I can't remember what it was. It came out very 'scrappy' -- which, in a quilt, is a good thing. |

Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow. ~Douglas Pagels, These Are the Gifts I'd Like to Give to You

Stevie, if you can't get your sewing machine working, you don't have to sew to enter.
Di, I've never tried my hand at quilting. Have you? Does your mother give lessons? :) |

I have quilted (since grandma did also, got to start when I was old enough to see over the frame), but I have a tendency to use a 'crowbar' in my mom's terms. She uses the tiny little betweens that I can't even see when I hold. I have chubby, stubby, little kid fingers.
I'm pretty good with applique, though, so anytime she needs or wants that, I help.
Never asked if she'd offer lessons. lol! |

This looks really cool - and since I'm back in this country, I may actually be able to do it!
A clarifying question: Carol, you said you wanted us to make a 12x12 paper using this technique - are you looking for the entire 12x12 to be the "quilt" or just somehere on that 12x12 to include a quilted block? |

| Hi Mary! Glad you're back. Well, the sample on the demo had a significant piece of a quilt on the page, so let's say at least that. I was going to aim for a 10x10 piece so I'd have a border. HTH! |

As I just posted in the "What Now?" topic, I am slowing down to catch up and I realize that sounds like an oxymoron; but, now I can participate in contests and this sounds like a fun one. Through YouTube, I learned how to backstitch and you all know how I like to sew on my cards and scrapping so I'm up for this one! And Carol, YES, I'm competing (?) for prizes :0) |

| Okay, Babs, I'll put your name in the drawing. Although we call them contests, they are random drawings. Glad you're joining in. :) |

| Pam, I just posted a long comment...yeah, yeah, I get wordy! Your submission was totally awesome! When I think of quilting, I think of little SQUARES - your pieces are not squares and I like that :0) |

Not sure I followed the directions on the linked page, but I think I got it close. It seemed a shame to cover up part of it!

I remembered that mom calls this piecing technique 'mile a minute', as nothing is cut by pattern, you simply sew together any two pieces that are the same size at some point. Once the pieces are sewn, then whack it into squares, and sew squares together. Fast, no fuss. |

Question: I really would love to do this challenge but the pic I have in mind is copyrighted and I have not been able to place my order yet (from AC's 1 year photo shoot). Can I do the background, embellshments, ect and put cs for pic and complete w/pic after I get it ordered?
Just let me know - I may have to rethink!! |

| You can add demention to your strips by inking the edges before you adhere or sew them. Gives you a really 3d look to it. I will upload my one tommrow got to go out tonight. |
Live life to the max. Be sure to enjoy the journey. |

| Angela - If you've got another photo the same size, maybe you could put a different picture in there for now, until you can replace it with the one you really want to use? |

| I've done the quilting, but need to wait for my picture. I may have to try another one with the inking process--now that it's done, I'm sure that would have given it a more finished look. But, I enjoyed identifying papers to use together. |
